Description
The Byzantine church of Saint Nikolaos Megalomatis (the Large-Eyed) or Stratilatis (the Commander) is situated on the east side of Mt Skopos, southeast of the city of Zakynthos, on the right of the earthen road that ascends to the monastery of Panagia Skopiotissa (Holy Mother of Skopos), and forms part of a lying in ruins later monastery complex dated to the 18th century.
The church constitutes one of the few specimens of Byzantine church architecture preserved in Zakynthos. The strategic location of the site, in combination with its geographical position that affords a panoramic view to the west coast of the Peloponnese, where the castle of Kyllini (Chlemoutsi) dominates the landscape, attached particular importance to the church that, moreover, overlooks the village of Vasilikos, where imperial estates extended traditionally in the Byzantine period.
