Description

Not to far away from the small village of Orthonies, you will find the small Monastery of our Lady (Panagia) Spiliotissa (of the cave)  It is built close to the cave where an icon of Madonna was found.

Records state that the Monastery was built around XVI century and is surrounded by lush vegetation and forests of olive and pine.

It isn't possible to actually enter the Monastery at present and you can only take photos from the outside and from the surrounding areas.

Founded in the middle of the 16th century by the Monk Ioannikio Katsiva whom at a very late age nominated legally, the Hierarch and Abbot of Anafonitria, Dionysus Sigouros, later the Saint and protector of Zakynthos, as his catholic warden and supervisor.

Below you will find a small selection of photos of the Monastery of Our Lady Spiliotissa.
